Description
A sliver of sunlight breaks through the clouds to light up the dome of the cathedral and the bell tower in Florence Italy. This is the view from the Piazzale Michelangelo across the Arno River from the touristic and historic core of the city. It is inarguably the most famous place to watch the sunset in Florence. Every night crowds of people gather here to listen to music, party, take wedding photos, and of course, wait for the sunset. From here you have a panoramic view of the city from end to end and with the hills beyond. The dome of the cathedral (Il Duomo di Firenze or Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore) dominates the skyline (right) while Giotto’s Campanile (bell tower) in white, red, and green marble stands out as the tallest structure on the left. To the left and right of the Campanile are the octagonal tower of the Badia Fiorentina and the square tower of the Palazzo Vecchio, respectively. The red dome of the Medici Chapel sits behind the low white dome of the Baptistery on the left.
