Description
Hiraṇyagarbha (Devanagari: हिरण्यगर्भः ; literally the 'golden womb' or 'golden egg', poetically rendered 'universal germ') is the source of the creation of the Universe or the manifested cosmos in Indian philosophy, it finds mention in one hymn of the Ṛkveda (RV 10.121), known as the 'Hiraṇyagarbha S and presents an important glimpse of the emerging monism, or even monotheism, in the later Vedic period, along with the Nd Ssuggesting a single creator deity predating all other gods (verse 8: yo deveṣv i devka t, Griffith: "He is the God of gods, and none beside him."), in the hymn identified as Prajti.
The Upaṇiṣad calls it the Soul of the Universe or Brahman, and elaborates that Hiraṇyagarbha floated around in emptiness and the darkness of the non-existence for about a year, and then broke into two halves which formed the Svarga and the Pṛthvi.
In classical Puranic Hinduism, Hiraṇyagarbha is a name of Brahmso called because he was born from a golden egg (Manu Smṛti 1.9), while the Mahta calls it the Manifest.
Om or Aum is of paramount importance in Hinduism. This symbol (as seen in the image on the right) is a sacred syllable representing Brahman, the impersonal Absolute of Hinduism omnipotent, omnipresent, and the source of all manifest existence. Brahman, in itself, is incomprehensible; so a symbol becomes mandatory to help us realize the Unknowable. Om, therefore, represents both the unmanifest (nirguna) and manifest (saguna) aspects of God. That is why it is called pranava, to mean that it pervades life and runs through our prana or breath.
