I started on the Tonsina Creek Trail near Seward Alaska one afternoon for a short 3.4 mile out and back hike. When you reach Tonsina Point, you have beautiful panoramic views of Resurrection Bay and the surrounding mountains. Plus you are in the northernmost rainforest in the world so the contrast between snow-capped mountains and green forests is amazing. I read up on the hike ahead of time and read “Don't proceed further down the beach past the point unless you have intentionally timed the tides. Rising tides have trapped people on the wrong side…” I had seen on the map where the trail would be underwater at high tide and I wasn’t going that far. So I thought I was OK. I spent some time walking along the beach to the point on the right, trying to photograph some eagles in the trees, and just enjoying the peace and solitude. It was probably less than 100 yards from the main crossing. But when I started back, I ran across some small streams running into this creek that were already substantially flooded with the incoming tide! Ruh-roh! I was NOT going to get ‘trapped on the wrong side’ for an overnight stay so the choice was spend time to walk farther along and try to find a crossing, take a flying leap across the stream in front of me, or just take off my boots and make a quick strike across the cold water. Long story short, I took door #3 and got to higher ground quickly!
