Title
Hidden Path To The Sea
Artist
Steve Henderson
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
On the beach, the landscape changes not only daily but hourly, as the rising and falling tide leaves its mark on the sand and in the rocks.
So it is with the artwork, Hidden Path to the Sea, which gently leads the viewer forward through the rocks, following a glistening ribbon of water down the beach. Is it a path? Or is it just the illusion of a path? Will it become stronger and more bold as we follow it, or will it wisp away into nothingness?
To a certain extent, we can’t know until we start to follow it, our eyes on the ground before us as we move forward. There is a bit of fantasy here, a bit of mystery and intrigue, a delightful adventure as we pick our way through the stones and driftwood.
Ahead of us, just in the distance, is the sea, so we know that even if the path wends its way into nothingness, we will not be lost.
Paths are interesting things: some of them are clearly marked and easy to follow, possibly because so many people have already been on them.
But other paths, like Hidden Path to the Sea, are less clear, less demarcated, less wide and smooth and clear, and sometimes, in our lives, we feel as if we are on such a path.
“Does it go here?” we wonder. “Did it just disappear? Why is this path – my path – so incredibly difficult to follow, and why does there not appear to be anyone else on the path with me?
“Why can’t I be on a broad, smooth path?”
And while this is a reasonable, understandable question, the answer invites us to a deeper place: wide, smooth, well traveled paths generally lead to familiar, quite possibly crowded places.
The narrow, hard to see, hard to follow paths lead to places not many people have been, but places very well worth being. Perhaps our Hidden Path to the Sea is taking us there.
(The beach painted in Hidden Path to the Sea is located on the Oregon Coast in the United States, but it is a place that could be anywhere on the coastal landscape.)

Beautiful choice of colors; great depth of field; simply a masterpiece! Love the reflection in the foreground. I imagine a variation of brushes and palette knives, correct?

Me also fascinates the phrase "path to the sea". It's like a spell, a prayer, a poetry... All my life I going by path to the sea... This work breathes a sea air.
