Description
There aren’t that many trees right alongside the road in Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, but as we came upon one to the right it blocked the view of a dead tree immediately behind it. So by the time the dead tree was in view, we were pretty much right in front of it. And there, perched atop the dead tree, was a great blue heron! I am used to looking out towards the water for the herons, but this one was about 20’ above my head! The camera I had in my lap had 700mm equivalent lens. I tried to step out of the car quietly and slowly but discovered that the heron more than filled the frame of the lens. I inched back slowly one baby step at a time until I could get the entire heron on the photo. Luckily I had time to get a couple of shots before it flew off.
