The story behind this picture takes place several decades ago. This farm in Wisconsin had two barns. One was called the Horse Barn and the other one was called the Cow Barn. They were sturdy enough structures so the farmer could use them as he saw fit. Obviously, a few years before this picture was taken he used horses to plow his fields, cut the hay, bring in firewood, and all the many chores that needed to be done. Thus the Horse Barn. The other barn was used for his dairy cattle. It was the place where he milked the cows, stored his hay, and did the many things that needed doing for his herd. He had a milk house at one end of the barn where he stored the milk he gathered for the week and where it was kept cool with water from his well. On the north side of the barn towards the front, he build a small shed to store his grain to feed his cattle.
The time came when he wanted to sell the farm and move elsewhere but no one would buy the place so he rented it out. The farmer who rented it built a large lean-to on the north side of the Cow Barn where he kept more hay. One day a storm blew up. The winds were strong and they pushed the Cow Barn so that it now leaned to the north. That made it completely unsafe and unusable for cows or anything else. The ironic thing was that the Horse Barn stood just as straight as before with no damage. You can see it in this picture sitting back to the left. It was probably less than a hundred feet away.
The moral of this story: don't let the tenement farmer build something that will keep a structure from falling all the way. Your insurance money will not provide the funds needed to restore the building.
And, I guess, that meant the original farmer had to sell at great cost to himself. (True Story from the farm I used to live on many years ago)
