Description
Here are the three main steering wheels at the helm of the Coast Guard Cutter USCGC Eagle. At nearly 300 feet long, the Eagle is the only actively commissioned steel hulled sailing vessel. She serves the United States Coast Guard as a training cutter, where coast guard cadets get a feel for the awesome power of the sea. Her home port is New London, Connecticut, at the United States Coast Guard Academy.
This ship has an amazing history. She started out as a German vessel known as the SSS Horst Wessel. Her keel was laid in 1936, and for most of her service life she was either a training vessel or a ship of war for the German Navy. She was taken by the United States after World War II as an article of war reparations. Refitted and renamed, she has been an American coast guard cutter since 1946.
