A Heermann's Gull (Larus heermanni) basks in sunshine at a Southern California beach as a surfboarder in the background heads out to sea. I patiently waited for a long time for a surfboarder to walk into the frame. The photo would have been boring without the surfboarder.
Heermann's Gull is one of North America's most beautiful gulls (just look at the red-rimmed eye and the gorgeous beak!) and is a unique pacific coast bird. Almost the entire global population of this species breeds on one island group off the coast of western Mexico - following breeding season, these gulls disperse northward along the coast as far as southern British Columbia. Surprisingly aggressive for birds their size, Heermann's Gulls steal fish from the pouches of Brown Pelicans and actively chase other birds to dislodge prey items. They also forage on their own, catching small fish near the surface of the sea, as at this location. (birds.audubon.org)
Surfboarding is a sport in which a person stands or lies prone on a surfboard and rides the crest of a breaking wave toward the shore. A surfboard is an elongated platform used in surfing. Surfboards are relatively light, but are strong enough to support an individual standing on them while riding a breaking wave. They were invented in ancient Hawaii and made from local trees. Major advances over the years include the addition of one or more fins on the bottom rear of the board to improve directional stability. Modern surfboards are made of polyurethane, polystyrene or carbon fiber.
