Description
Wishing my precious Fine Art America friends and customers a most blessed New Year!
The eighth day of Hanukkah 2016 was celebrated on New Year's Day 2017 (Hebrew year 5777), a rare occurrence for the two holidays to overlap.
This artwork depicts a Jewish Menorah with the middle Shamash (Servant) Candle. The Shamash Candle lights the other eight candles, which represent the eight days of Hanukkah. This commemorates the miracle when a one day supply of Temple oil lasted eight days.
Hanukkah is from the Hebrew word, "Chanukkah" which means "re-dedication". This commemorates the event when the Maccabees re-took the Temple from enemy hands, cleansed it and re-dedicated it to the service of God.
Likewise, at the beginning of the year and each day, may we re-dedicate ourselves afresh and anew to God through our love of His presence, reading His Love Letter, the Bible, and talking to our Creator each day through the powerful communication of prayer.
The Shamash Candle of the Menorah is called the "Servant Candle", because it lights all the others on each day of Hanukkah. As it serves, it is honored by its slightly raised and centered position in this Menorah.
As a follower of Yeshua Jesus, when I see a Menorah I am reminded of my Messiah keeping Hanukkah (John 10:22-23) and how He came not to abolish Torah and the Law, but to fulfill them (Matthew 5:17-20). Indeed, He came through Bethlehem ("House of Bread" in Hebrew) as the Light of the world (John 8:12), the Servant Candle (Shamash) giving Hope to humanity not only at Hanukkah and Christmas but also every day of the year.
God bless you abundantly throughout this New Year! May you have a fabulous day, and terrific forever!

Artistic notes::
Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ ב ס " ד ] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
