Rain threatened all day and it looked like it could rain any minute or…. not! I could sit around looking at the sky or…just get out and do something! I determined that the Vizcaya Bridge (Bizkaiko Zubia in Basque, Puente de Vizcaya in Spanish) was a short train ride from Bilbao Spain so, what the heck! I really wanted to see this UNESCO World Heritage site so I was on my way. If you thought that UNESCO World Heritage Sites were either fabulous natural landscape scenes or ancient ruins, you would be wrong, as I was! The Vizcaya Bridge is neither a natural landscape nor an ancient ruin. It is a transporter bridge built in 1893 and still working today, carrying passengers and cars across the Nervion River between Portugalete (on the right) and Las Arenas (part of Getxo; on the left). It is popularly called Puente Colgante or ‘hanging bridge’. What looks like a suspended tram car on the left bank is the transporter, carrying up to 6 cars and about 200 people, plus a few motorcyles and/or bikes across the river in 1½ min. I had never heard of a transporter bridge, and it happens that fewer than two dozen were ever build with only 12 in use today. The Vizcaya Bridge was the first ever built. Its purpose was to have a river crossing without impeding the flow of boat traffic. And if it wasn’t enough fun to cross the river and back in the gondola, you can also take a lift to the top and cross via the walkway 50 m above the river! Naturally I did both. On July 13, 2006, the Vizcaya Bridge was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In Spain, it is the only monument in the Industrial Heritage category. UNESCO considers the bridge to be a perfect function of beauty and functionality.
