Description
The Hall of Five Hundred, or the Salone dei Cinquecento is the most imposing room in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence Italy. It is 170 feet long and 75 feet wide, designed in 1494 as a seat of the Grand Council consisting of 500 members. Although there are legends of the work that Michaelangelo did in this room in the early 1500s, the current paintings date from 1555-1572. They depict battles and military victories by Florence over Pisa and Siena. ‘Inferno’ fans will remember Professor Langdon and Sienna being chased through the Palazzo Vecchio where they find the secret exit in the Hall of Maps and end up in the space above the Hall of Five Hundred where huge wooden trusses and beams hold up the works of art in the ceiling. Spoiler alert: one of the bad guys falls through the roof in the chase and onto the floor below.
