If dreams aren’t big – impossibly big really – then they’re not dreams.
Dreams are sometimes confused with goals, items on a list, plans – all of which are manageable, able to be reached with enough hard work and persistence.
But dreams. Ah . . . dreams. Dreams are big things, great things, grand flights of our imagination and soul into a dimension that is beyond and deeper than what we are taught is reality. Dreams are what we hold deep in our heart, deep in our being, and rarely, if ever, share with others, because we know how some people, in ploddings of unimagination, shoot down other people’s dreams. (They almost seem to enjoy it.)
Indeed, we ourselves rarely allow ourselves to look at our dreams, much less admit to having them, because we have been so well trained by corporate thought, religious teaching, authority-driven indoctrination to deny that they should even exist.
“What I want is impossible,” we say, echoing the voices the the dream shooters. “I need to stop being unrealistic.”
But we don’t stop, because the dream we have, that impossible dream, IS real. That’s why we can’t get rid of it.
The artwork, Great Expectations, celebrates the strength and determination of a woman with a dream. She stands in a place where dreams often seem more plausible – at the ocean, where the vastness of sea and sky opens our hearts and minds to bigness.
She looks out into the beyond, seeking, searching, waiting with an ache in her heart that is profound in its intensity. But she stands confident as well, because she knows that what she seeks is worth finding, and She Will Find It.
The Corgis at her feet sense this, looking up into their mistress’s face with an expectation of following her where she will go. They all have great expectations, indeed, but then again, what are expectations and dreams if they are not great?
