Description
This beautiful Great White Egret was shopping for lunch under the dark canopy of mangrove trees. The largest of the White wading birds, it stands a little over 3 feet tall with a wingspan of almost 5 feet. It's bright yellow beak and black legs distinguish it from the smaller Snowy Egret which has a black beak, black legs and bright yellow feet. They were hunted for plumes almost to extinction in the 19th century until laws were created to protect them. Living in coastal Florida I am happy to say these graceful wading birds are seen almost every day.
