Grand Canyon Afternoon At Lipan Point
Artist

Description
Breathtaking rock formations cast dramatic shadows in the afternoon winter sun across the spectacular landscape of Grand Canyon in northern Arizona.
This extra-wide panoramic view looks northward from the South Rim at Lipan Point (elevation 7,360 feet / 2,243 meters), considered one of the best vantage points of the canyon. God granted my wish to visit this magnificent landmark on my birthday in February 2016.
Pictured are portions of the Grand Canyon Supergroup, a sequence of mind-boggling geologic formations showing the various colorful layers of sedimentary rock strata exposed by dramatic erosion. The distant plateaus and mesas leading into the horizon are over 8 miles away from where I stood to take this photo.
According to Wikipedia, the geology of the Grand Canyon has among the most studied rock sequences on Earth, with nearly 40 major sedimentary rock layers exposed in the canyon.
The 1,450-mile-long Colorado River, about a vertical mile below the canyon rim, is seen entering the photo on the right and flowing westward toward the left, becoming hidden by the massive rock formations and re-emerging briefly in the left side of the photo before continuing along its journey through the canyon and Arizona onward to the borders of Nevada and California.
On the right side of the photo, the Colorado River meanders around alluvial deposits creating mineral-rich soil comprising the Unkar Delta. The ancestral Pueblo First Nation American people farmed this area between 850 and 1200 A.D. This is one of more than 2,700 archaeological locations found within the canyon region, offering intriguing insight into the lives of people who lived in and around the canyon for over 4,000 years.
Located in northern Arizona, United States, the Grand Canyon is named one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The park is immense, containing over 1.2 million acres of land measuring 1,904 square miles. The canyon itself is 277 river miles (446 km) in length, up to 18 miles (29 km) in width, and one mile (1.6 km) in depth.
The land in and around the canyon is co-managed by the U.S. National Park Service and the First Nations Peoples of the Havasupai Nation, the Hopi Nation, the Hualapai Nation, and the Navajo Nation.
During my high school days I had the honor of hiking into the Grand Canyon to the Colorado River on the Bright Angel Trail. Many years later on my second visit (sans hike), I am reminded once again of the prayer -- a powerful declaration -- by Moses in Psalm 90:1-2::
"My Lord, You have been our dwelling from generation to generation. Before the mountains were born, or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God!" (Tree of Life Version [TLV])

Artwork notes::
For another view of this location, please see my other image, "Grand Canyon Winter Sunset" in my Grand Canyon album.
Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
