Painting - Oil On Panel
What is grace, really?
Many people’s initial reaction is that it has something to do with being coordinated – graceful – and describe a dancer, someone who moves with fluidity and grace.
Other people, speaking religiously, talk about grace in all formats, although too often it still seems associated with rules. True grace, one intrinsically believes, has to do with mercy, compassion, and the unconditional acceptance of a person to the point that we are more concerned about their growth and advancement as a human being, than we are about punishing them for doing wrong. Rarely, however, do we see grace such as this practiced, in our own lives toward others, or in others’ response to us.
The artwork, Grace, captures a moment as a young woman – in an amazing concoction of intense pink – dances by the seashore, her bare feet in the sand, and her hands overhead grasping an ephemeral draping of cloth. “She must be a dancer,” we initially think, but it’s time to pause and think again.
The young woman in Grace isn’t necessarily a dancer, so much as she is a woman so at ease with herself, so content with the sun on her shoulders and the breeze in her hair, so confident in her value as a human being, that she impulsively launches into a spontaneous dance, because this is the natural way to express such feelings of joy and happiness.
Such is the result of true grace – that confidence in being loved and accepted, to the point that there is no other response but to bask in it, rejoice in it, dance in it. Grace like this is a true treasure indeed, one well worth looking for, and sharing when we find it.
