One such tale is that an impoverushed business owner took in a stray cat at a time when he could barely feed himself. As a way of thanking him, the cat sat in the front of the business waving his paw to beckon customers. With this gesture the cat brought wealth and prosperity to the business owner. Today the maneki-neko figurine is popular many other eastern cultures and can often be found in homes and businesses of Chinese and Vietnamese families.
