Description
When in Remington, Alberta, I visited their magnificent Carriage Museum. This particular carriage struck my fancy because of the painted Dutch winter scene painted on the back of the seat. I had always wanted to do something with it but just couldn't figure out how to use it in a work. Then, while perusing Dutch landscape painters of the 16th century in Wikimedia Commons I came across this work by the dutch artist Andreas Schelfhout. The final result is an reworked and extensively modified picture incorporating a country road that fit with the horse drawn carriage. I hope that you enjoy this work.
Dutch waterways regularly froze in the cold of winter. In the landscapes, reflecting their harsh winters life was hard during the Little Ice Age of the 17th and 18th century. Winter was characterized by extremely severe cold that arrived early and lasted well into spring. I am not certain that this carriage would have been found in such a harsh setting or used on the iced roads but it may have been during some parts of the year.
Andreas Schelfhout, according to Wikipedia, belongs to the Romantic movement. "His Dutch winter scenes and frozen canals with skaters were already famous during his lifetime. He became one of the most influential Dutch landscape artists of his century". He made about twenty paintings a year. His death is said to have ended the 'Romantic' period of Dutch Paintings.
I highly recommend seeing the Carriage Museum in Alberta Canada if you are traveling through Remington. It has an extensive (incredible) collection of carriages of all sorts. As their website states: The Remington Carriage Museum houses the largest collection of horse drawn vehicles in North America with over 270 carriages, buggies, wagons and sleighs. Carriage rides are available during the summer, weather permitting."
Hope you enjoy this 'fusion' work. Multiple filters were also used to create the effect of an old oil painting. Regards.
