Description
Featured in my book "Gates of Savannah" (History Press).
Originally a carriage house built in 1848 for Andrew Low, this building has sheltered slaves,
servants, horses, carriages, cars, and miscellaneous other tenants prior to Ms. Low investing it as the First Girl Scout Headquarters, a gathering place for staff, meetings, and tea parties, beginning in 1912.
Upon her death in 1927, most of the building was left to Savannah Girl Scouts to continue
using with the exception of one side to be used as a garage for the Low house. By the late
1930's, thanks to an exchange with the Colonial Dames, Savannah Girl
Scouts now claims the entire building. The addition became the first Girl Scout museum.
It was left to the Girl Scouts of Savannah (now known as Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia) and has been in continual use for Girl Scouts ever since, longer than any other site in the US. Currently, the property is open to the public, containing council archives, a museum, and a program center/shop.
