Description
General Store and Post Office Waterloo Village NJ by Regina Geoghan. A vertical view of the stone building that served as general store and post office to the community of Waterloo Village NJ. The store was built in 1830 and a year later the Morris Canal opened with a section running along the banks where the store was located. Waterloo was the mid-point on the 107 mile canal journey between PA and Newark NJ and it became a favorite stopping point where the canal boats drivers to spend the night to refresh and to stock up on needed supplies. The ground level of the store offered shelves of household necessities while the top and basement levels were for storage. Large bags of grain from the gristmill and other items were dropped onto the canal boats via a pulley system from the top floor window
