Description
Galveston Seawall Postcard, original artwork by GW Mireles. As a fellow Texan and Galvestonian, I am proud to post this picture of the Galveston, Texas Seawall which is known as the longest Seawall, 10miles, in the United States. It is also known for the longest continuous sidewalk in the world which is adjacent to Seawall Boulevard and runs the length of the Seawall. πΊπΈππ
.
.
The Seawall is approximately 17 feet high and 16 feet thick at the base and at the time cost approximately 16 million dollars. It runs along the Gulf coast waterfront of Galveston Island near the main parts of the city and extends somewhat to the west end of the island. π€ππ
.
.
It was built after the great 1900 Storm which killed more than 6000 people on Galveston Island. The purpose of the Seawall is to protect the city from future hurricanes which it has done so since itβs construction. πππ
.
.
The Galveston Seawall is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Many miles of the Seawall are painted with murals, by children depicting underwater life. ππ π¬π
