Description
Take a walk along the 4 km path of the thousands of red Torii gates at the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto Japan. You may think ‘if you’ve seen one gate, you’ve seen them all’ but like a Japanese garden it’s an everchanging scene. The Fushimi Inari Shrine dates from 816 and is Kyoto’s most important Shinto shrine as well as one of the most popular attractions for foreign visitors to Japan. The function of a torii is to mark the entrance to a sacred space so that the path leading to a Shinto shrine is always straddled by one or more torii. Inari is the god of rice, sake, and abundant crops. Over time, Inari came also to be the patron of business, merchants and manufacturers as having good income was a sign of good crops of a sort. Each gate was paid for and donated by national and local businesses whose name and date of donation is inscribed on the back of the gate (so this photo depicts the ‘front’ of the torii). The custom to donate a torii started in the Edo period (1603 – 1868) to get a wish to become true or to thank for a wish that became true. Good luck finding out how many torii there are. It’s either ‘roughly a thousand’ or ‘thousands of them’ or ‘over 5000’ or ‘over 10,000’. Take your pick, or just enjoy the walk!
