Description
The Francis Scott Key Bridge is also known as the Baltimore Outer Harbor Bridge or simply the Key Bridge. It crosses the Patapsco river, nearly at the place the river meets the Chesapeake Bay. This view of the Key Bridge was, appropriately, captured by Bill Swartwout Photography from the grounds of the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Baltimore, MD.
Construction on the Francis Scott Key Bridge began in 1972, and the bridge opened to traffic on March 23, 1977. This 1.6 mile Key Bridge crosses over the Patapsco River where Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the words of the Star Spangled Banner. This facility also includes the Curtis Creek Drawbridge. Including the bridge and approach roadways, the entire facility is approximately 10.9 miles in length.
