Description
"Fort Gaines, Dauphin Island, Alabama, Entrance" by Catherine Sherman.
The American and Alabama flags fly over the sally port entrance of Fort Gaines, on the eastern tip of Dauphin Island, Alabama.
The fort is one of two nineteenth century forts that guard the entrance of Mobile Bay. Established in 1821, Fort Gaines is best known for its role in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the American Civil War, where Union Admiral David Farragut shouted his now-famous order, “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!” The fort is open to the public as a museum and has original cannons, a blacksmith shop, kitchens, a museum, gift shop, and tunnels. Exhibits include the huge anchor from USS Hartford, Admiral Farragut's flagship
The site is considered to be one of the nation's best-preserved Civil War era masonry forts and has been nominated for listing as a National Historic Landmark. Due to its proximity to the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, however, it is also has been designated Eleven Most Endangered Historic Sites in America due to on-going shoreline erosion.
