Title
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Artist
Rosemary Colyer
Medium
Painting - Pastel On Board
Description
"...Any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee." From "Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions", 1624, John Donne. John Donne, an English poet, wrote this series of meditations on the variable and therefore miserable condition of man.
This writing inspired my painting of the church of Saint Lawrence, in the tiny hamlet, Leaveland, Kent, England. This is a simple thirteenth century church, built largely from flint. Sadly, the bell is no longer there, but, to my knowledge, the church is still used for worship.
