Description
My Creole father told me of punishment he received for speaking French in school. He was raised bi-lingual. Sympathizing with the children who could not speak English he often spoke French in school to prove that he was proud of his French culture. He was forced to kneel in raw rice while writing lines for speaking French. Often he changed the lines to read the way he wanted them to be. He said that it required the teacher to punish him again and again. I have talked to hundreds of relatives and friends who told me they too wore teachers out in order to make a way for French to return in school. When I was in school if we mixed too many French words with our English we were sent to speech classes where our language was "improved." When my childen were in elementary school Things were beginning to look up however as French was offered as a second language. By the time my children were in middle school the French Immersion classes were introduced but unfortunately they were a bit too old. Today in my grandchildren's youth French Immersion classes are in place through out Acadiana.
