Description
The Hawthorne Bridge located in Portland Oregon crosses the Willamette River. It is the oldest vertical-lift bridge still operationg in the United States and the oldest highway bridge in Portland.
This photo was taken from The Eastbank Esplanade which is also known as the Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade. This is a pedestrian and bicycle path which follows the east shore of the Willamette River. After being washed out after a major flood in 1996 the Interstate 5 bicycle bypass was rebuild and expanded. It was renamed for former Portland mayor Vera Katz in November 2004.
The esplanade runs for 1.5 miles from the Steel Bridge to the Hawthorne Bridge. The south end connects to the Springwater Corridor which extends south to Sellwood, then east to Gresham, then south to Boring. The esplanade also has a 1,200-foot floating walkway.
