The winter weather was overcast but during the ride up in the Rack Railway to the Benedictine abbey at Montserrat, Catalonia, Spain we emerged from the cloud layer. We hadn't totally emerged from the clouds however and waves of clouds and fog blew over the area until later in the day! It was quite a dramatic weather scene and only accentuated the feeling that we had emerged into Brigadoon! Montserrat is a mountain top monastery situated atop an unusual rock mountain, located not far from Barcelona. It is very popular among Catalans, and Catholic pilgrims come from far and wide to see the Black Madonna. Not only is Montserrat Monastery of significant religious importance but the natural beauty surrounding the monastery is simply breathtaking. You can see the funicular through the fog which goes to the top of the mountain and from there you can choose a number of different walks, all with amazing views of the Catalonian countryside.
