Artist
Frederick Leighton
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
This is a reproduction of Frederick, Lord Leighton's Masterpiece, "Flaming June"of 1885. This is regarded as the Magnus Opus, Great Work, of Leighton who was noted for his Classic themes. This is directly in the tradition of the Ancient Greeks who often depicted Venus asleep. The oleander branch in the painting represents the fragile edge between Sleep and Death. During the 1960's the painting failed to meet a $ 140 reserve but has soon regained its place as a masterpiece. Paul Weller and Luis Miguel both honored the painting in songs and it decorated a record album in 1989. The original is 47 inches high and 47 inches wide. The original is owned by the Ponce Museum of Art in Puerto Rico.
