Description
Firewood derives its name from the fact it is one of the first plants to emerge following a wildfire. It is common across Alaska, in open areas such as fields or roadsides. This fireweed was found on our road near the Alaska Highway. Fireweed is seen as an indicator of the changing seasons in Alaska. It blooms from the bottom upward. The purple “branches” near the bottom mark flowers that have bloomed already. The blooms near the center are a range of new and fading blooms. The purple buds near the top are next to blossom. When the blooms reach the top, summer is drawing to a close. This fireweed has reached the seed stage. Summer is officially over in Interior Alaska.
