Description
Mount McDowell's striking sandstone formations glow red during golden hour as the evening sun works it way through cloudy skies to shine one last burst of light across the Arizona desert. Long shadows streak across the firey earth giving striking contrast to the land. The iconic mountain which sits along the Salt River between Mesa and Fountain Hills was named for General Irvin McDowell, a Union officer in the Civil War. However it should not be confused with nearby McDowell Mountains that lay just a few miles to the north. To avoid confusion, it is much more commonly referred to as Red Mountain or Firerock by locals in the area. This Mountain is part of the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community, Native American Reservation land, and is considered sacred by the Native American community. While it is off limits to hiking, climbing and recreation, its beauty may still be admired from a distance from both the Town of Fountain Hills and the City of Mesa within Maricopa County in Arizona.
