Description
“Field of Lace” —Original photography by Doug Kreuger
It’s August, and the peak of summer in Northern IL. At this time of the year, the fields near my home are covered in lace; Queen Anne’s Lace that is.
This delicate-looking, tall wildflower is a standout favorite of mine. Its large, flat, white tops remind me of clusters of snowflakes, while its fragrance offers a hint of carrots. In fact, Queen Anne’s Lace is also called “Wild Carrot”, and the carrots of today were once cultivated from this plant. Although the large tap root (carrot) is edible, the leaves of this plant are toxic, and may irritate your skin.
Do Not attempt to eat Queen Anne’s Lace unless you are a qualified plant expert, because, there is a similar-looking plant called Water Hemlock, which can be fatal, if consumed by humans.
