Description
I cannot tell you how excited I was to see this Ferruginous Hawk and get a few shots before it departed. Though the dark morph is rarer, I have seen it. This was the first time to see the light morph. It is considered a western hawk and is barely on the line of the range map to be seen in northern Oklahoma and listed as winter (scarce). It is the largest of the North American Hawks. They hunt by hoppping or running across the ground, from perches such as poles and by flight.
Scientific name: Buteo regalis
