Description
The lichen is starting to form on the wild trees that edge a field meadow near me and as I was out bird watchin,g this pretty Northern Cardinal landed close by on the lichen branch. It is a female and her feathers have come in softly and in beautiful tones which makes her orange beak really stand out.
Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) are active song birds that sing a variety of melodies. They are actually omnivores, eating insects, grain, fruit and sap. Fun fact: They can live up to around 15 years in the wild.
