Feathery Flower
Artist
Ken Powers
Medium
Painting - Watercolor On Paper
Description
I have no idea what this flower is even though it is growing out in front of my house. On many occasions over the course of the last 10 years I have completely mowed it to the grown with my lawn mower but it still keeps coming back. The other day, since I have a new appreciation for floral painting, I noticed what an incredible flower it had on it. It was very billowy and feathery and seemed so delicate and was probably about 5 inches across. I feel a little bad for previously hacking it to the ground since it really is pretty interesting. I wanted to achieve a bit more looseness with this piece and wanted to incorporate a little more impressionist and abstractionist techniques into its rendering. The original is 10.25"x14" in size and is painted with Rublev 18th century reproduction paint, Daniel Smith watercolor paint, and Winsor & Newton watercolor paint on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper. The texture of the paper really worked well with the coarsely grained Rublev paint to create an interesting background.
A print of this piece has been sold and licensed to ABC Studios for inclusion in the hit series "Desperate Housewives" starting in Season 7. It can be seen to the left of the front door above a dark table in the entry way of the home of Bree Van de Kamp. It can be seen very clearly from this character's kitchen as well.

I've really noticed how much your grayer backgrounds, so often just make the flower pop off of the page. Your shadows are so wondeful as always.
Ken Powers replied:
Thank you Diane! I was looking for a way to push those whiter flowers outwards and opted for shades of gray. Always experimenting!

Thank you Sandra! You are too kind! I have been watching the show since they purchased the piece but have yet to see it on screen. However, I am usually painting while that show is going on so my attention is 100% directed at the TV. Hopefully it shows up at some point!!

Another winner!! My first thought was a peony, but they bloom in spring. Sometimes it's the leaves that help identify it. If you want to find out, take leaf, or a picture, to a local nursery and they'll be able to identify it for you.

Ken, outstanding, outstanding! I think you acheived everything you were going for. The colors are soft and lovely. I am a Master Gardner, and I can't figure out what this beautiful flower is. I am wondering if it is a west coast flower. Regardless, a very beautiful painting, indeed.
