Description

The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail was designated as Virginia's state insect. This species of butterfly is one of the largest found in Virginia, with a wing span of 3 5/8 to 6 1/2 inches. Tiger Swallowtails are commonly found in deciduous woodlands, and parks. The male and female have black stripes on their yellow forewings, but the female has more blue on her hind wings.

On a hot August morning there were plenty of Tiger Swallowtail butterflies nesting on the Lantana flowers in the Italian Garden in Maymont Park, in Richmond, Virginia
