Farming In Canyon De Chelly

Description
Farming today in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, does not differ much from the Anasazi, the Ancient Ones, thousands of years ago. At the beginning of summer, famiolies will go to the canyon floor to plant their crops by seed in the soil, and wait for Monsoon rains to water their crops. Once the crops have matured, the farmers go to market to sell their crops.
Today, however, homes are decked with solar panels, dish for televesion reception, and all of the comforts many of us have in our homes. The biggest difference, is that the peace and tranquility of the area, is a nice pace from the hectic life of the mesa top.
On the bottom of the canyon, children can play under the Russian Olive and the Cottonwood trees. Unfortunately, the Russian Olive trees have overtaken the lands, and now are being removed by the Navajo Tribe. The cottonwood trees are beginning to thrive once again. The shade provided by these huge and lush trees, is delightful.
Another difference, is that children can also mount their horses and explore the canyon as children of the ancestors did. So many wonderful experiences are at the tip of the fingers of these families.
As summer ends, the families will return to the mesa top homes, resume their lives once again, and the children will return to school.
