Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber, named after Enola Gay Tibbets, the mother of the pilot, Colonel Paul Tibbets. On 6 August 1945, during the final stages of World War II, piloted by Tibbets and Robert A. Lewis it became the first aircraft to drop an atomic bomb. It was built in Nebraska at the Martin Aircraft plant (as was the other B-29 that bombed Japan the same day).
As found (and explored) at the Smithsonian Institution Air And Space storage/rehab/restoration facility in Springfield, VA, c. 1969.
It is now re-assembled and exhibited at the Udvar-Hazy museum in Chantilly, VA
