Description
At Japanese Shinto shrines you will find special boards with a lot of wooden plaques hanging from them. These are called ema and they are used to write wishes and prayers to the kami spirits of the shrine. Although it is a Shinto custom, they might also be found at Buddhist temples as the two belief systems have mingled. You purchase the plaque at a nearby booth, write your message, and hang it on the board. Many ema have pictures on them that may relate to the god or spirit connected to the shrine, to the animal of the year in the Chinese animal zodiac calendar, or nowadays to modern characters (e.g., Hello Kitty, Disney). Common wishes are for health, love, safe childbirth, success, and good results in exams. Old ema are ritually burned during a special ceremony where prayers are said to help fulfill the wishes. In Japanese, ema means ‘picture-horse’ which refers to the original custom of donating a horse to the shrines to obtain good favor. Since this was a very expensive custom, over time it became a wooden plaque with a picture of a horse, and still later to the varied pictures found today.
