Description
I've always been interested in mechanical watches and clocks. As a young kid I used to drive my Mom/Dad crazy because every time they would buy me a watch (insisted that I wear one), I had a nasty habit of taking them apart to see how they worked. Of course, I could never put them back together; I used to love those mechanical Timex watches! ! Mom got smart after too many broken watches and bought me an LED watch when they 1st came out…. And dared me to break it.
Chicago has quite a few interesting clocks around town and this is one that most folks may not know of. The Elgin National Watch Company made the clocks for the 1911 Chicago and Northwestern Terminal and when they tore down the terminal, they salvaged the clock pictured.
Many of the clocks throughout Chicago are made by Elgin which at one time had the world's largest watch manufacturing plant right here in Chicago. Unfortunately, it closed in 1968.
All proceeds will be donated to Chicago's Cornerstone Community Outreach in honor of photographer Richard Cleis, 1965-2021.
