Made of wrought iron and originally built as the entrance arch for the World's Fair (Exposition Universelle) in 1889, The Eiffel Tower (La Tour Eiffel) stands 324 metres (1065 feet) tall and weighs 10,000 tons. Named for Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, its final design called for 18,000 pieces of puddle iron and 2.5 million rivets.
