Description
As visitors approach Martha's Vineyard, an island off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the Edgartown Harbor Light shows the way to the town of Edgartown. The lighthouse marks the entrance to Edgartown Harbor and Katama Bay. It is one of five lighthouses on the island of Martha's Vineyard. The current structure was a replacement to the first lighthouse, constructed in 1828, was a two-story wooden structure that also served as the keeper's house. It was demolished, and replaced by the current cast-iron tower, in 1939. Originally located on an artificial island a quarter mile from shore, the lighthouse is now surrounded by a beach formed since 1939 by sand accumulating around the stone causeway connecting it to the mainland.
Cape Cod is a peninsula in the shape of an arm off the U.S. state of Massachusetts. It is a popular summertime destination for its quaint villages, seafood shacks, lighthouses, freshwater glacier ponds, and bays and beaches. Visitors can board ferries in Hyannis and Harwich Port to cruise over to the Cape islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Cape Cod extends from Provincetown at the northeast tip of the fingers to Woods Hole in the upper arm in the southwest. Chatham is located mid-Cape at the elbow.
