Description
After we spread some hay on the ground for new grass to grow, this bird and its male counterpart showed up, aggressively scratching the area to get at seeds and insects. This female is identified by its colors and is distinctly different from the male which is predominantly jet black with some white markings.
They are also known as Chewink because their call resembles that word and are also classified as New World Sparrow. Their scientific name is Pipilo erythrophthalmus.
One interesting fact concerning them is that they are unable to distinguish their eggs from other birds. Thus the Brown-headed Cowbird is known to take advantage of them by laying eggs in the Towhee's nests leaving them to raise their young.
