East Side Of Dettifoss Waterfall In Iceland

Description
Dettifoss waterfall is located in Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland and it is the second most powerful waterfall in Europe! The falls are 100 metres (330 ft) wide and have a drop of 44 metres (144 ft). Its water drops down to the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. It's part of Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, which flows from the Vatnajökull glacier. Dettifoss is part of a popular tourist route around Húsavík and Lake Mývatn in North Iceland, called the Diamond circle. Mývatn is a good place to stay if you want to visit this magnificent waterfall.
It is worth it to visit Dettifoss both from the East and the West side. Which one is better though if you don’t have the time to do so?
To get to the East side you have to follow Route 864, an old gravel road with many potholes through an alien-like landscape. From Route 1 it is about 45 minutes to drive there. A 4x4 wheel drive is really recommended. Usually this road is passable only during summer. At the end of the road there is a small parking area. Follow the trail and after about 400 meters you will reach the waterfall. You can get really close to the waterfall from here plus usually you won’t have to deal with the water spray. The photo you see here was taken from the East side.
Standing next to this waterfall makes you really feel and almost be afraid of the raw power of nature as you see the huge amount of water falling into the canyon river. No wonder why Ridley Scott chose this spectacular scenery to be the background of the opening scene of his movie Prometheus!
The West side is much easier to access. You exit Route 1 and you follow the paved Route 862 for about 20 minutes until you reach the parking lot. There is an upper viewpoint from which you can enjoy the impressive waterfall, or you can follow the path and after a short hike of about 800 meters you will get close to the waterfall. It was pretty windy when we got there so we had to face too much spray.
So, if you have the time I would suggest of course to visit both sides. It’s about a 1 hour drive from one side to the other. If you have to choose only one though I have to say that the East side is much more impressive while the West side is much easier to access. I hope that was helpful!
