Original photography of a bald eagle in flight with branches for nest building above the Potomac River. The nest was built high in a sycamore tree on an island across from Section C of the Billy Goat Trail. Adult bald eagles are 3' or more in length with a 6-7 1/2' wing span, weigh around 10 pounds and are dark brown-colored birds with a distinctive white head and tail. Immature birds are dark brown all over and somewhat mottled, not attaining adult plumage until around 4-5 years of age. Bald eagles build massive stick nests in the tops of trees and reuse them year after year. (Edited from park service site.)
