Description
The Downy Woodpecker in this image is considered to be the smallest woodpecker in North America. They are not much bigger than a white-breasted nuthatch. Look at the other birds in this gallery and you will see two of the above mentioned nuthatches.
The downy woodpecker has the same colorings as the hairy woodpecker. The biggest difference between the downy woodpecker and the hairy woodpecker is the size. The hairy woodpecker is bigger and has a much bigger bill. These two birds are usually the first birds that bird watchers identify.
The downy woodpeckers live in open woodlands and the brushy and weedy edges of the forest. The downy woodpecker is also a backyard visitor. They like the suet feeders, black oil sunflower seeds, millet, peanuts, and chunky peanut butter. It is possible to see them occasionally drink from an Oriole or Hummingbird feeder.
I have not seen this particular woodpecker try the hummingbird feeder. In my yard, they seem to be quite satisfied with the suet.
