Down From The Mountain
Painting - Acrylic On Paper
She had been filled with confidence and hope, daring the difficult journey through the wintry landscape and arriving in early Spring for the meeting high on the mountain. After a night of a betrayal that would echo down through centuries and the violation of her body and spirit, she came down from the mountain, followed by the soldier who would have nothing of the cruelty.
In silence they walked into the valley of shadow, not knowing yet the river of red and all the years that would roll out before them. Had she not been so brokenhearted, might she have looked back and seen the lion looking down? Or might she had made a better choice to let them kill her and then floated above the scene to see the land stretched like a hungry lizard and fly fast to the Little Lion’s father and his eagle eye in the distance?
She would ponder these things in her heart in some time far from this. But on this day, they followed the river and made their way into all that was yet to be revealed.
This painting is a soul memory of what took place at Peyrepertuse in the South of France and is inspired by my return to the mountain in December 2016 on my second visit to France. This is what I know by heart.
