Down East Dories At Dawn
Hanne Lore Koehler
Painting - Watercolor
These dories were tied in a row to the dock at dawn on the east coast. They lead our eye to the hazy orange glow of the rising sun through morning mist.
I painted this watercolor using a photo taken by our friend and neighbor, Jamie Smith as reference. The following poem was also written by Jamie:
THEY THAT GO DOWN TO THE SEA
The sea is a dream without a dreamer
"Til one ventures from its shore;
And vessels are quite useless
"Til driven on a course.
They who brave life's stormy waters
To mount turbulent waves,
Will sweep through its valleys,
The voyage the reward.
The sea is ever changing, flowing, lasting,
So the vessel can't sit empty,
Forlorn without a port.
When a hush hangs o'er the waters
And evening settles nigh,
A ring of dories guards your harbour,
And peace returns once more.
