Description
More than 150 species of hibiscus are known, preferentially distributed throughout the inter-tropical and subtropical regions of the globe. They belong to the Malvaceae family, the same one that includes mallow and the cotton plant. In gardening, the hibiscus Hibiscus rosasinensis, or China rose, is used above all, from which many varieties have been obtained from hybridizations, including bonsai. The Hibiscus syriacus, or Syrian rose, and the minor hibiscus Hibiscus trionum, among others, are also planted. The species of hibiscus that interests us here is the medicinal hibiscus Hibiscus sabdariffa, also known as Jamaica rose.
In Asia Minor, and in some parts of East Africa, such as Egypt, the flowers of this hibiscus and other similar ones are taken in a refreshing infusion with a pleasant taste, which is called carcadé or red tea, because of the intensely crimson hue that takes on when infused. It is usually taken at social and family gatherings, and is interpreted as a sign of hospitality. The variety that is taken in Chad is known as Karkanji and, according to experts, it is the most exquisite
The hibiscus flower is traditionally worn by Tahitian and Hawaiian girls. If the flower is worn behind the left ear, the woman is married or has a boyfriend. If the flower is worn on the right, she is single or openly available for a relationship.[citation needed] The yellow hibiscus is Hawaii's state flower.
