Description
I was standing there looking through the barrier . . . the tall wrought iron fence with a rusty sign stating, "No Trespassing. Violators will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law." Wow, there must be something really important down there! There is . . . or I should say there was. I used to be able to wander on the other side of this fence a dozen or so years ago.
When we first moved into our new home, our backyard was pretty wild. We could walk on a path and end up at a big lake (well, big for a neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio!) We could stand back there and see beautiful tall old trees surrounding this peaceful place. Fall was especially beautiful with the bright orange, yellow and red leaves ablaze on the steep hills leading down to the water's edge. My favorite photo hangs in my living room of one of my daughters sitting on a big boulder looking away from me, looking at the beauty of those trees reflecting in the still water. It was magical. Not too much later though, a developer came along and cut down so many of those glorious old trees and built tall condos hanging over the edges of the ravine giving these new neighbors great views of our lake. Not too much later, the fence appeared, blocking our entrance to one side of the lake.
We can still get to our side . . . but no one can go to the other side. I'm pretty sure, the folks in those condos don't walk through the wild woods and explore the nature behind the fence. So when I stand and look through the grid that separates me from the other side, it always brings sweet memories to my mind of what we used to have. It reminds me to appreciate today. Drink it in with as much gusto as you can and be thankful. I also smile thinking that the wild creatures appreciate being protected from us annoying humans trespassing in their homes!
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!

Well seen Karen, and the story rings so true. I had a favourite old barn that always had my attention whenever I drove by it. Stopped and photographed it a few times. Summer, winter , Fall, it always called out to me. One time I grabbed my camera to go shoot some pictures of it, and much to my dismay, and sadness, when I drove up to it, only about 5 % was still standing. Literally floored me. Thought it was to make way for development, but nothing has happened on site for over 3 years. So sad to see these majestic buildings disappearing forever, the fields that supply us with sustenance , covered over by our greed. When will we learn to respect our mother earth... Great image Karen, and a POD in Best of Minimalism....:-)
