I began to see this rock formation near Calfosch/Calfosco in the Pelmo Mountain in the Dolomites in northern Italy at the top of a high mountain pass in the Belluno region, from quite a distance away. It was almost as if we passed to a different world as we traveled toward the Odle Group. On either side of this pass there was lots of greenery, trees at lower elevations, wildflowers, but here it was almost as if you were passing through a rock desert, just stark peaks, huge rocks and snow. I felt like I was seeing a rock cathedral reaching into the heavens. The view is so monotone, shades of gray with a hint of iron coloring, but the lack of coloring is more than compensated for with this overpowering mountain grouping. The clouds overhead looked like rain, but never released a drop in this region, adding to the texture of this photo.
